lead magnet ideas to build mailing list

If you’re a creator, influencer, expert, or marketer who wants to grow your mailing list without complex strategies, using simple lead magnets and CTAs, read this post to grab some good lead magnet ideas.

These 3 lead magnet ideas helped me grow my mailing list up to 12,000 subscribers and sell courses and products for $20,000.

Three Types Of Lead Magnets That Help You Grow

In my first and most successful project about freelancing, “Digital Broccoli,” I collected 12,000+ email subscribers.

Later, this list brought me about $20,000 in course and service sales.

Lead magnets are just the beginning of a sales funnel, but they help you collect emails and grow authority and trust so people will buy from you faster than when you use paid ads only. In general, email marketing is the best and main tool to convert your readers into paying customers. So try this on!

Let’s start with my favorite lead magnet which I believe is the most effective lead magnet to collect subscribers and build a huge mailing list.

The First And Most Successful Lead Magnet: An Email Course

As I wrote a lot about freelancing, I decided to pack all of my knowledge into a simple email course. I named it “Become a freelancer in a week.” It was 5 emails about creating a portfolio, searching for clients, setting up a working process, and building a personal brand.

I collected emails via several embedded forms on my blog and had a standalone sign-up page where I wrote:

  • who would benefit from this course;
  • a summary of every lesson;
  • why people can believe me (credentials);
  • how often these emails would be sent (every day).

This standalone page brought me 50% of subscribers – 6,000+.

The Second Lead Magnet: A Free Webinar “How To Become A Copywriter”

I rarely host webinars (though they are a very good way to collect leads) but at that time I wanted to share some of my copywriting tips with aspiring writers before my copywriting course began.

I made a simple short page with a sign-up form and collected 1,000+ subscribers in 3 days.

The Third Lead Magnet: Free Digital Assets For Freelancers And Copywriters

I created several simple forms (like this) with valuable content for my followers:

  1. a freelance contract template
  2. some free videos from my paid courses
  3. a checklist for improving their LinkedIn and Upwork profiles
  4. They brought me the rest 5,000+ subscribers to my mailing list.

So my main strategy for collecting emails and building my mailing list using simple lead magnets looked like this:

  1. Create an email course that helps a person dive into a topic they’re interested in. 3-5 emails are enough.
  2. Create several simple products: checklists, templates, lists of tools, or ideas.
  3. Share some exclusive content for free if you have paid courses.
  4. Add the links to your sign-up forms and pages to every post on your social media and every page your website has.
  5. Give your subscribers value regularly: it’s not about collecting only, it’s about building a connection with them.
